La Celada

The hamlet of La Celada is located to the north of the municipal area, between the "Cerro del Azucarón" and the "Loma de las Ventanas."

The name of the hamlet comes from Latin (celada means hidden villa), and undoubtedly, La Celada is hidden among mountains and hills. However, to be more precise, it seems that the true origin of the name refers to the site of an ancient ambush or hidden place.

The first remains found in the hamlet reveal Iberian and Roman presence, although the Arabs also inhabited the hamlet, where some Almoravid coins and medieval texts have been found, mentioning the existence of a farmhouse called La Ariza.

Rising majestically above the hamlet is the "Sierra de las Ventanas," whose name is associated with the image it presents, apparently pierced with windows in the rock. Its origin dates back to the Tertiary Era, and it contains numerous fossilized shells of ammonites and belemnites. Its upper part is a magnificent natural viewpoint, from where one can contemplate splendid views of the reservoir and the municipal area of Iznájar, featuring the typical flora and fauna of the sun-exposed slopes, with esparto grasslands, broom thickets, gorses, rockroses, and badgers, as well as reptiles like the ocellated lizard or ladder snakes.

The most prominent architectural elements are the Church of San José and the Public Laundry. The church was designed by the architect Fernando Angulo and inaugurated on March 19, 1979, the feast day of its titular image. The Public Laundry recalls not-so-distant times when these places were reserved spots and obligatory meeting places for women who came to wash clothes, now evoking human activities that fade into the memory of our time due to disuse, providing evidence of very important social activities from an ethnographic perspective.

It celebrates its festivities around March 19, in honor of San José, the patron saint of the hamlet.
